Birdsong
This tribute piece was given to the calligraphy instructor, Master Penman Michael Sull, upon the completion of his Singapore calligraphy workshops in 2018. The form of the bird as well as quill flourishes in white ink are simplified versions of the ones he teaches in his workshops. The addition of the sculptural paper elements allows for outlines to be highlighted using light and shadow, and the dried flowers are the anchor for all the pieces to rest upon.
The finished piece comprises of multiple sculptural paper layers following the curves of the calligraphy lines.
The white ink on the background layer becomes visible when the piece is backlit using a lightbox.
