Geometric Poetry

This was completed as a gift for a friend after we both attended a beginner’s course on Islamic Geometric Design. The pages build on each subsequent step of the pattern drawing process, with papers of different opacity forming a completed pattern when viewed through a light source or held against the light.

The cover is made from traditional marbled paper bought from a local bookbinder, and the organic appearance balances the clean geometry of the pages within.

The finished pattern on the left was achieved by multiple simpler patterns overlaid on top of each other. The layers, made with sheets of translucent paper, that make up the final pattern can be seen on the right.

View from the last page: The foundation of the pattern begins with a horizontal line, upon which the other shapes are built upon.

The intervening shapes are then built up using an overlay of simple geometric shapes such as circles and squares.
