The Woman Warrior

This commission was based on a specific quote from “The Woman Warrior” by Maxine Hong Kingston, and it inspired several trips to the Peranakan Museum and the NUS Baba house for further research. A personal thank you to Jamie for believing in our vision to create this piece while indulging our many questions about her family culture and motifs. This piece was an absolute joy to bring to life.

The finished piece is foregrounded by the silhouette of a woman. Her back is etched with a quote from “The Woman Warrior”, which reflects her lived experiences.

We did several iterations of the chrysanthemum hairpin while exploring different ways to showcase texture in a piece of jewelry and flower.

A snapshot of the various tools used to create the different elements in this tactile piece.
